It is seldom that a bard will take the unlawful road of thievery and deceit, I say usually, because I've seen it done and done well. So "usually" we're not really known for the more rogue leaning side of our class. At the least you will learn pick pocketing at some point, lock picking as well.
While it is a fun avenue for RP, just like how we're not mages, or druids, we're not rogues. We just... happen to know things. However, due to our reputations as storytellers and entertainers, we make pretty decent spies, certainly not as good as one trained specifically to be a spy, but we're quite skilled at moving from place to place, carrying messages and watching the goings on. And if a Bard is attached to a particular court, they may be called upon by their patron to serve in such a capacity.
Some Bards are happy being simple entertainers, wandering the lands, singings songs, telling stories or acts of tumbling, there are many bards that can and do align themselves with patrons from the aristocracy and rulers of the day and fulfill varied roles.
Some serve as the historians of a particular patron and record and praise their heroic deeds, they are the entertainers in the courts, and carriers of secret messages who can deliver without fail and in its true forms.
There are skilled musicians and poets, those who dance who are able to manipulate the emotions of their audience, those who use those skills to sway the minds of an audience, to effect change of epic magnitude.
A Bard in RP can either be a good entertainer or a good companion in battle. I can see one who goes about the lands, talking to people, carrying the news or fulfilling other duties. A bard should not be rigidly defined in its role but contribute to RP with the diversity only he or she can.
So then, who can be a bard? Well, with good training almost anyone can. While in the past, a good bard needed to be a poet, everyone knows rhymes are much easier to learn and remember than prose, it is not necessary to be a poet in our RP. Not everyone can write poetry, but everyone can write prose, and with a little practice and positive reinforcement, one can become very good with prose, but even still, it is not a must.
May times people say I would like to be a bard but I cannot write poetry or prose. It is true that some people cannot write poems that rhyme but that does not mean that they cannot describe what they want to say in other ways. A bard looks inside himself and examines his emotions, he looks at what he truly feels, what is it that enchants him, makes him glad, sad, happy, angry or brave. He can write, talk or sing about these things and if he does it with honesty he will be called a bard. The talent inherent in the bard needs to be practiced and polished just like any other talent.
The bard is a many faceted gem, each facet has to be carefully polished to bring the true shine out. You heart and feelings are what is inside the stone and all the other things refract form the inside to reflect to the outside.
And it is true, of any class, the bard is the most versatile, and proves that one not need be a trained master in only one branch of study to be incredibly powerful.
But you must always remember, never let the power go to your head, people will always see you as a singer, or storyteller, they won't expect you to be a wielder of powerful magic. We do have spells afforded to us that pack a brutal punch, but if it's not done properly, someone's panties are going to bunch.
